Swimathon 2018 – We did it!

Former East German Competitive Swimmer Teaming up with Hampstead’s own East German Ladies Swimming Team!!!

On April 29th at Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre, we; Little Hands Design, have participated in the 2018 Swimathon hosted by Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie. We are excited and grateful that our neighbours, the EGLST, have followed our invitation to join our team!

What a fantastic local collaboration between Little Hands Design; Camden’s non-profit Fashion Design and Dressmaking School headed by Astrid Jacoby, formerly from East Berlin and a competitive swimmer in her youth, and the brilliant E.G.L.S.T (East German Ladies Swimming Team) group of men trying to look like Easter German lady swimmers in Hampstead ponds. You can imagine what fun we had – our team of 20 (!) swimmers ranging in age from 6 years to almost 60 years swam their hearts out.. there were races, cheers and a general fantastic spirit on the day!  All in all we covered 20k – that is 800 lengths in the Swiss Cottage swimming pool!

As a thank you Little Hands has designed swimming trunks for participating members from original East German flags which were proudly modelled by the swimmers .. like this ‘showgirl’ from the E.G.L.S.T.

We chose to take part in this event after we learned of two of our student’s whose mother recently passed away from cancer. We believe it is our responsibility to be there for our students during their highs and lows, inside and outside of the classroom. We wanted to show our support for our Little Hands Family in a practical and useful way. So far managed to raise a fantastic amount, far exceeding our expectations, – Thank you for helping us reach £4000.- by donating here https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/littlehandsdesign

JustGiving sends your donation straight to Cancer Research UK, Marie Curie & The Swimathon Foundation and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you are a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more.
